Course Description

The Solaris Operating System Administration for Experienced HP-UX and Tru64 Administrators course provides students with the necessary knowledge and skills to perform core system administration tasks in the the Solaris 10 Operating System (Solaris 10 OS). This course describes key system administration tasks in the Solaris 10 OS, and identifies corresponding HP-UX or Tru64 operating system elements. This course is intended to provide experienced HP-UX and Tru64 administrators with information about core Solaris concepts, and focuses on practical experience implementing Solaris features through lab exercises.

Who Can Benefit

Students who can benefit from this course should already be familiar with standard system and network administration tasks in their native UNIX environment. This course provides the skills necessary to adapt standard HP-UX or Tru64 administration skills to Solaris 10 equivalents.

  • Administer user accounts, including configuration of Role-Based Access Control using the command line and the Solaris Management Console (SMC)
  • Demonstrate proficiency using the Solaris Volume Manager
  • Describe special file systems available in Solaris, and configure NFS and Autofs

Module 1 - Overview

  • Understand how different versions of the UNIX platform were developed
  • Define major similarities and differences between Solaris and other variants of the UNIX platform

Module 2 - Installing the Solaris OS

  • State different installation methods available
  • Explain hardware requirements for Solaris installation
  • Demonstrate how to install Solaris OS using CDROM and DVD

Module 3 - Performing Package and Patch Administration

  • Identify the packages installed on a system
  • Display information for a package
  • Add a package to the system
  • Use a spool directory to add packages to a system
  • Remove a package from the system
  • Check the status of current patches
  • Access patches from the web using SunSolve
  • Install a patch
  • Remove a patch

Module 4 - Executing Boot PROM Commands

  • Describe boot programmable read-only memory (PROM)
  • List the basic boot PROM commands
  • Use probe commands
  • Describe nonvolatile random access memory (NVRAM)

Sun - Solaris 10-OS Sun Certified System Administrator (SCSA)

This certification is for system administrators tasked with performing essential system administration procedures on the Solaris Operating System (Solaris OS) and technical application support staff responsible for administering a networked server running on the Solaris OS.

Sun offers certifications for the Solaris 8, 9 and 10 OS, each consisting of two exams. Candidates must pass both part I and part II exams of the same Solaris OS version in order to obtain certification.

If you are already certified as a system administrator for a previous version of the Solaris Operating System, you can take the upgrade exam for the version of the Solaris of interest to you.

Sun - Solaris 10-OS Sun Certified Network Administrator

This certification is for experienced system administrators who are or will be responsible for administering Sun systems in a networked environment that includes LANs and the Solaris Operating System (Solaris OS).

Sun offers certifications for the Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 OS, each consisting of one exam. Certification requires Sun Certified System Administrator for Solaris OS (any edition) status.

There are no prerequisites to this exam.
